International Women’s Day – IWD Hereford
International Women’s Day, IWD, on 8th March celebrates the social, cultural, economic and political achievements of women across the globe. The day focuses on unity, equality and advocacy.
Now, more than ever, there’s a strong call-to-action to press forward and progress gender parity. There’s a strong call to #PressforProgress motivating and uniting friends, colleagues and whole communities to think, act and be gender inclusive.
Over 20 countries – particularly in Asia – celebrate it with a day off work for all, while another three (including China) allow all women to take a day off. Its first official acknowledgement was back in 1911 and became a cornerstone holiday in the Soviet Union from 1917 (even being a day off from work from 1965 onwards). Since 1977, the United Nations has made it a focus day for both women’s rights and world peace.
Celebrating Herefordshire Women
For the first time, this year in Hereford on 8th March there will be a series of Women’s events organised by individuals, communities and groups.
Everyone is welcome to visit the daytime events. These include women sharing information not only about their lives but also the lives of others. Why not join in at open mic and dancing sessions? You’ll find the timetable for the City of Hereford events on the website.
